What Is Self Care For an Animal Professional?

You likely didn’t find your way here because everything is going perfectly. More often than not, something in your life feels heavy or out of balance—and it’s beginning to affect the work you care so deeply about.

Animal care professionals pour immense time, energy, and compassion into the animals they serve, as well as the people around them. In doing so, there is often little left for themselves. Whether you work in a zoo, the veterinary field, the equestrian world, pet care, or another area of animal care, this work is both emotionally and physically demanding.

True self-care means learning to prioritize your own needs without guilt. You cannot give your best to the animals you care for if you are not first caring for yourself. To sustain a long, fulfilling career in animal care, self-care is not optional—it is essential.

Now is the time to make yourself a priority so you can continue doing what you love. Together, we can work toward setting realistic expectations, creating achievable goals, processing loss, managing difficult work environments, and reigniting the passion that brought you to this work in the first place.

Learn to care for yourself with the same care you give the animals.
